Coco Gauff Uses ‘Girl Power’ To Power Her Way Into WTA Top 50

Coco Gauff has become the first 15-year-old in 15 years to reach the top 50 of the WTA rankings… and we’re not surprised.

Ranked 686th at the beginning of the 2019 season, unknown Coco burst onto our screens and into our hearts with a spectacular streak at 2019 Wimbledon which included her defeating her idol, Venus Williams in the opening round. Though her Wimbledon run ended with a 4th round loss to Naomi Osaka, Coco went on from there to claim her first WTA title in 2019 Linz, and ended the year ranked at No. 68, an impressive 618 point jump.

Then, Coco made a strong start to the 2020 season with her impressive run at the Australian Open, defeating defending champion Naomi Osaka and becoming the youngest player to take out a reigning women’s champion in the history of the Grand Slam. Again, she lost in the 4th round, but to Sofia Kenin, who went on to win the title. Other WTA Tour results have elevated Coco even higher, for as of this morning, she is ranked the No. 49 WTA player in the world!

The last time a 15-year-old reached the top 50 was when Sesil Karatantcheva did it the week of August 1, 2005. And before that, Jennifer Capriati actually made the top 10 in 1990 when she was just 14… WOW!

Coco will no doubt continue her rise in the ranks when she returns to the courts at the Indian Wells Open next month, as it happens to be one of the biggest WTA tournaments outside of the grand slams due to its Premier Mandatory status.

And we’ll be there behind our TV screens cheering her on… cuz, we’re #LocoForCoco!
